(excerpt) Chapter four: On The Run
Xavience the madman knew exactly where he was. And in so, he would know exactly where his friends were. This was why he was so eager to get his friends to the safety of--
“Ethan,” Isaac said lowly, glancing in the rearview mirror. His voice wavered uncertainly.
“What?” Ethan said quickly, jerking himself out of his thoughts.
“You see the car behind us?”
Ethan glanced up at the mirror. A black Sedan with purely black windows drove behind them. The driver wore sunglasses and a suit. His demeanor screamed who he worked for and what his reason was. There were multiple people in the vehicle. Ethan cursed. He knew that they’d find him sooner or later—but he’d hoped for the latter.
“Floor it,” Ethan growled.
“What?”
“Floor it. Maybe we can outrun them.”
“Ethan, I seriously doubt—”
“Just shut up and floor it.”
“Whatever… Marley, Jason, you’d better hold onto something.” He said, he slammed his foot against the gas pedal and the convertible jerked forward. The muffler bellowed and they shot off like a bullet. It may have been foolish, Ethan thought, but at least it would save him from using the Gift. Or more like a curse to him, it felt like.
The car behind them, newer in make and brand, was apparently faster then the antique convertible. It sped up and appeared next to them on their left. The black window rolled down and there sat a man with a sleek rifle directed right at them. A panic look struck Isaac’s face. He kept glancing at the gun.
Ethan rose his palm into the air. The top was rolled down. “Drop the gun!” he roared. The man immediately dropped the gun and it fell to the ground in a tattered mess. A shocked expression veiled the man’s face. Isaac glanced on Ethan, unable to keep his full undivided attention on the road he drove on.
“Stop the car.” Ethan growled. Isaac looked uncertainly at Ethan, but put his foot on the breaks.
He made it stop slowly at first, but it jerked at the end and Ethan spread his arms in front of him to break his headfirst attack on the dashboard. The Sedan continued to drive, then made a wide angled U-turn. Ethan reacted quickly. He jumped out of the car, not bothering to open the door.
“Stay!” he told his friends. They nodded, panic-stricken. Ethan positioned himself ten feet from the car and shook his arms. He hoped this wouldn’t backfire on him. He took a deep breath and saw the black car coming closer. He closed his eyes and clenched his fists. He had to be extremely careful.
He opened his eyes and made a swipe with his right hand, his eyes were glazed over and the driver’s window rolled down and a large looking gun was positioned at him. He swung his left hand over his right, and then clenched both hands into fists, and made an invisible breaking motion.
The car literally exploded.
It flipped frontward, and something blew in the back of the Sedan that made a fiery explosion. It rolled forward several times. It was as if something invisible, maybe space itself, had slammed into the front of the car at full force. Ethan knelt to the ground and held both hands up. The car flew, destined to crash in him and his friends. He let out a cry and made another swiping movement with his left arm. This time upward. Something unseen then rammed into the bottom of the car, and it was sent flying over him and his friends. He ducked and his friends cowered, mixed with awe and fright at the massive thing flying over them.
The car bounced once and continued to flip, and then it stood still in one place before a fuse blew and a large explosion filled a ten yard radius. Ethan and his company braced themselves. After smoke cleared, there was no stirring or movement from within the Sedan. Wordlessly, Ethan kept his gaze on the ground and walked slowly back to the convertible. He opened the door and slipped in.
“Problem solved. Now get on the freeway.”
